An online compendium of all the things you might want to know about our motel, and some hopefully helpful hints for your stay here.
Thanks for joining us in the beautiful Grampians. Here’s a list of important (and some not so important) things you should know about so you can enjoy your stay even more than the people who don’t bother reading these things.
Advice
There's a fair bit of information in this guide, and you may find yourself feeling confused or unsure what to do to make the most of your time here. If you need help, we are here for you.
Please talk to us about your plans. Whether you are here for one night or several, and whether you are an Olympic-level hiker or prefer your exercise in moderation, we can help you find the right combination of things to do while you are here. In fact, it’s one of our favourite things to do. Low contact does not mean low service. Call 03 5356 4445 if you have any questions.
Air Conditioning & Heating
Halls Gap is really hot in summer, and really cold in winter. So we fully appreciate your desire to control your room’s climate wherever possible. However, we like to be mindful of our energy consumption, so we encourage you to use your climate altering powers responsibly. Please turn your airconditioner and lights off when you leave your room.
All rooms have reverse cycle systems. Sometimes they take a while to respond, so if you’ve pressed a button and nothing has happened, just wait a minute. If you keep pressing buttons, the machine gets confused. If you’ve got hot air blowing and you want cold (or vice versa), press the mode button until the sun turns into a snowflake (or vice versa).
If you get confused, hold your hand up and feel the air. If it’s hot, that’s the heater; if it’s cold it’s the aircon. If there’s no air blowing, you may not have turned it on yet. Do that, then repeat.
BBQ’s
There are BBQs around the grounds and they are free to use. We just ask that you don't leave a steaming mess of charred onions and sausage fat behind. The BBQs are cleaned regularly, but sometimes there's someone else who wants to use it before we can get to it. If you find a steaming mess of charred onions and sausage fat has been left behind, please let us know, and we will bring out the magic BBQ cleaning wipes immediately.
Blankets & Pillows
Spare blankets and pillows are available in your room. Despending on your room type they may be in or on top of the cupboard, or under the bench. Sometimes they are in the little cupboard under the TV. Let us know if you can’t reach them, or if you need more.
Breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day (your mother was right!). It’s also our favourite meal. Sadly, we can't offer our delicious buffet breakfast at the moment. If you haven't already brought your own breakfast supplies, you have a few options. You can hit up the general store in town for supplies, you can try your luck with one of the cafes in the morning (they will be busy, and capacity is limited), or you can see what goodies they've cooked up at the bakery.
Broken or Damaged Equipment
If you find something that isn’t working properly, please let us know. Chances are we’ve got a spare one lying about in the shed somewhere, or it can be fixed with a bit of Gaffers Tape and/or WD40. If you broke said equipment, please tell us. We promise not to get cross, as we are sure it was probably an accident. If it broke while being thrown across the room Rock ‘n’ Roll style, you will need to replace it (the cost of that Rock n Roll lifestyle!). So if you must go all Rock ‘n’ Roll on us, we suggest you throw a toaster, and not a television.
Bugs
We are surrounded by natural bush, which is beautiful. And the unfortunate thing about the Australian bush is we have to share it with the bugs. Lots of bugs. Here are some hints and tips to help you avoid being badly bugged:
Remember that bugs are an important part of our ecosystem, so please try not to kill any of our wonderful native buglife (just kidding… swat ‘em if you got ‘em).
Bushfires
There are no jokes here. Bushfires are very serious, and potentially very dangerous. If you have any concerns, talk to us. If you are unlucky enough to be here during a time of high or severe fire risk we will do everything we can to ensure you are well informed and safe. Please listen to what we have to say, and if we ask you to leave, there’s probably a very good reason for it. Go. We’ll sort out the money later.
Bush Foods
You may have noticed that there are planter boxes outside the front of the motel and around the grounds. These contain indigenous bush foods that we hope to have ready for our guests to learn about and try as soon as they mature a bit more. Blake, our local indigenous food expert did this for us. If you want to try some of them for yuourself, go for it.
Campfires
Campfires are much more fun than bushfires, and much less dangerous. There are a number of campfire areas to enjoy on our property and we have firewood for you to use. But we would really really appreciate it if you don’t let your campfire turn into a bushfire. The way to do this is to keep them small and under control, and don’t light one at all on total fire ban days (yes, they apply to you too). Also, put your fire out before going to bed by tipping a bucket of water over it.
If you plan to light a fire, please let us know so we can make sure you have a bucket to put it out with.
Irons and Ironing Boards
These are things that some hotels have in every room, so some people become quite distressed to find that we don’t.
DON’T PANIC! Irons and iropning boards are available, and they are free to use. Just ask us.
Note: Please be aware that you are in the bush, and ironing your clothes is completely unnecessary, unless you are going to a wedding, in which case, it is very necessary, especially if it is your wedding. If you are going to a wedding and you need an iron please let us know immediately.
Check out
Checkout time is 10am unless you have made prior arrangements with us. A late checkout fee may apply if you check out later than this and we may charge you an extra day depending on the time of your departure. This gets really awkward and unpleasant for everyone, so please don’t let it come to that. If you are having trouble getting out on time, please talk to us.
Cooking in rooms
Your room has a kettle, toaster and microwave which we do understand limits your options a little bit. In the days BC (before Corona) we had a shared kitchenette and BBQ you could use for more advanced cooking, but unfortunately these are unavailable due to government health restrictions.
Please do not set up a mobile kitchen in your room. This is both a safety and a hygiene issue. Our rooms are not equipped for food preparation, and the guests after you do not want to walk in to the remnant scent of your dinner. If we do find the remains of a grand cook-up in your room, we may have to charge additional cleaning fees.
And PLEASE, do not cook food inside the kettle (yes, this actually happens).
DVD's and Games
There is selection of DVDs and games available for you to borrow in reception. We ask for a gold coin donation ($1 or $2) if you are going to borrow anything.
Please don't steal our DVDs or games. If you are going to steal one, please steal Sliding Doors, it's a bit rubbish. We will still have to charge you to replace it, but we'll replace it with something better.
Electric blankets
Electric blankets are on all beds. Setting 1 is the lowest heat setting and 3 is the warmest. Please don’t turn the electric blanket on in the morning and leave it on all day. Tony used to do that as a kid, and he's lucky he didn’t burn the house down. Also energy & the environment & stuff. Don’t waste it.
Emergency procedures
If we need you to evacuate your room for any reason, the emergency assembly point is at the front of the motel on the grass. Please follow our instructions, we want everyone to get out of here alive.
Please report all emergencies immediately to reception so we can get the appropriate help underway.
Environmental Initiatives
We are an environmentally focused motel. Given our location in the middle of this beautiful national park, how can we not be? We are not perfect, and running a motel there are certain things we can't avoid (like small fridges in every room and washing sheets after a single use), however we do our best to manage the things we can control.
We use a green energy provider, environmentally friendly cleaners wherever we can, dispenser packs for hand soap and shampoo (less waste), biodegradable bin liners (and only 1 bin per room), recycled tissues and toilet paper; and we have a comprehensive composting system for the motel’s food scraps. Wherever possible we are using local products, reducing, recycling and reusing as much as we can.

Feedback
This motel runs on feedback. Your comments and reviews help us to understand what we can do to improve the motel, and how we run it. Ands they help us to attract new guest
We would also really, really love it if you would (pretty please!) make some wonderful and helpful comments on TripAdvisor and/or the website you used to book your stay. If you have un-wonderful comments to make, they are really really important too, so please tell us so that we can make changes and make our service even better.
Food
Food is important, that's why we would like to make sure that you can have some when you want it. Because of health restrictions, the local cafes and restaurants are operating under very different conditions, so catering the the varying crowd sizes in Halls Gap can be difficult. Click here for the latest info about who's open and what's good to eat in Halls Gap. Remember, you are in a small country town, and most of the restaurants close quite early. 7:30pm is safe, anything later than that is risky, especially in winter.
Indigenous Culture
While most people know the mountain range as the Grampians. Aboriginal people have always known this place as Gariwerd.
We acknowledge and respect the traditional custodians whose lands we are fortunate to live and work on and we pay our respects to all Elders past and present.
It is a privilege to have the name Gariwerd. We encourage you to take some time to learn about the long history of this place by visiting Brambuk, the National Park & Cultural Centre. And we highly recommend visiting some of the ancient rock art sites (PDF) in the area.
Kangaroos
We hope you love our local kangaroos as much as we do. You’ll often find them hanging out around the back yard. If you want even more Roo action, they love to hang out at the cricket oval down the road every afternoon and evening (go out the back of the motel and turn right, it's not far).
Please don’t feed the Kangaroos. These are wild animals, who don’t understand the idea of “sometimes foods”. Once they get a taste for people food, they don't like going back to a diet of grass and leaves. This can lead to some of them (especially the big males) becoming more aggressive over time, and then they need to be put down. Please don't make us have to shoot our friends, it makes us sad.
Kangaroos are most active around dusk and dawn, so driving the roads around Halls Gap can be a little dangerous as the kangaroos have no road sense and can jump in front of your car with very little warning. Please drive carefully and slow down when driving around Halls Gap. If a kangaroo jumps in front of you, the best course of action is to Stay Straight and Brake. Swerving rapidly to avoid hitting a roo can cause your car to roll. It is better to take a dint to your car, than a dint to you and your passengers.
Kitchenette
Unfortunately in the Covid-19 era, shared cooking facilities are a no go. Our guest kitchenette until further notice. This is as disappointing for us as it is for you because we had to buy microwaves for every room. Ouch.
Kiosk
There is a simple kiosk at reception. We sell a basic range of beer and local wines, as well as soft drinks. SO if you are thirsty, pop by during reception hours (see below) and we will sort you out with something tasty.
Pets
Some of our rooms are pet friendly. We have welcomed dogs, guinea pigs and one time a rabbit. Unfortunately we can't allow cats, because cats are banned anywhere in Halls Gap because your cute little fluff ball is a potential mass-murderer of local wildlife. We love our furry, feathered and scaly creatures. Read our pet rules here.
Reception
Reception is open from 8am to 10am and 3pm to 5pm, 7 days a week, all year until further notice, unless there is a note on the door saying otherwise. Due to current concerns about spreading the coronavirus, we are trying to find the balance between being available to help, and sensible social distancing. We have done everything we can to reduce the need for every guest to pass through the reception area, so this little room does not become ground zero for a new outbreak.
No contact does not mean no service. Ifyou need help with anything, any time, you can call us on 03 5356 4445. We are usually not far away, and mostly sober. If you need assistance after 10pm, please ensure that someone is bleeding or on fire or both before you call.
Room Servicing
For the health and safety of our cleaning staff and our guests, room servicing is not available for stays shorter than 4 nights. If you are staying for 4 nights or longer, we will contact you to arrange a time to service your room if required.
Again, low contact does not mean low service. If you need anything for your room, like more tea & coffee, or fresh towels, just call us and we can sort you out. Please don't sit in your room feeling hard done by because there's not enough sugar for your coffee. We have lots of sugar (and tea and coffee and milk and towels), we just need you to tell us what you need.
Our philosophy is simple: we will assume everything is OK unless you tell us otherwise.
Shhhhhhhhhh...
Halls Gap is a small town, and it's a quiet town. We have a very simple rule here: your fun is not to come at the expense of someone else's peace and quiet. You are very welcome to use the tables and fire pits in the evening, and you are very welcome to enjoy a few drinks while you do so. But you must, must, must remain aware that there are other guests here who do not want to be a part of your party. Please keep your voices down, and no music. You might think you've got the best music taste in the world, but it's almost certain that someone else here disagrees.
Smoking
Smoking is bad for you, but you already know that, what with all the warnings on the packets and such. No judgement here.
Please don’t smoke in or directly outside your room, it really stinks. You can smoke outside in the garden area and use the ashtrays that are under the tables around the grounds. DO NOT THROW YOUR BUTS ON THE GROUND. It’s a National Park, and the gutters flow into creeks, and then the critters eat the buts , and they are not nutritious.
If you smoke in your room, we will have to close the room down for a few days to ge rid of the smell. If this happens, we will charge you a $100 fee for extra cleaning plus any lost revenue from the room closure, which is slightly more than the cost of 2 packets of cigarettes at current prices (damn Government!).
TV’s and DVD players.
There is a TV and a DVD player in every room. If you can’t work out which remote does what, or which button to push, please ask us. Sometimes they can be a bit quirky.
Being surrounded by mountains the TV reception in Halls Gap is sometimes a bit dodgy. And sometimes is it completely unwatchable. When this happens, you can always come to reception and borrow a DVD (see above).
WiFi
WiFi is free and is available all over the motel (and a little bit down the street). There is a 1GB limit per day per device, which is plenty to do all your normal internet-y stuff, but not enough to stream Netflix all night. You can purchase extra data if you want. Or you can come to reception and borrow a DVD (see above).
The network name is: Gariwerd Guest
The password is: hallsgap (shhh, please don't tell our neighbours)
When Halls Gap is busy, the internet runs very slowly. There is nothing we can do about this, it's just what happens when the population of the town swells from 500 to over 8000.
And finally Z is for … Zoo
Go to the Halls Gap Zoo if you have time. It’s terrific!
